0

At AuthorsWiki, we are delighted to connect with Victor John Lao, a writer and author from Metro Manila, Philippines, whose creative journey spans fiction, non-fiction, music, gaming, and visual arts. His debut novel, Bunny Syndrome, explores science fiction through a deeply human story about family, acceptance, and the challenges of raising a child with special needs.

Victor John Lao holds a college degree in Psychology along with a certification in Education. His interest in writing began during his elementary school years and continued to develop throughout high school and college. What started as a childhood hobby gradually became a lasting passion for storytelling and creative expression.

Alongside his novel, Victor has self-published short eBooks covering a variety of non-fiction topics, some of which have been translated into different languages and made available through online digital platforms. His creative interests also extend to video game streaming, songwriting, music, painting, drawing, jewellery making, and other forms of art and craft.

In this exclusive AuthorsWiki interview, Victor John Lao talks about his debut novel Bunny Syndrome, his early introduction to writing, his academic journey, creative interests, literary inspiration, and his plans for future books.

AuthorsWiki: Apart from writing, what is your occupation for livelihood?

Victor John Lao: I am a video game streamer and a musician. I have played video games since childhood, and gaming has become a personal brand for me as a content creator on social media platforms. I am also a songwriter, and I have songs available on Spotify where people can stream my music. I also enjoy art and crafts. I can paint on commission and make jewellery that I can sell.

AuthorsWiki: Tell us something about your first book.

Victor John Lao: My first book is a science fiction novel called Bunny Syndrome. It is about a boy with a condition that makes him look like a human rabbit because of an intentional experiment conducted by a mad scientist working at a hospital. I am a fan of science and, as a child, I always dreamed of becoming a scientist. However, I could not find a college course in my country that was related to science, so I eventually chose Psychology.

The book is about the challenges of raising a child with special needs and how parents can help him live a normal life, just like any other child. It is my first book, and I was inspired by the British author J.K. Rowling. I watched a documentary about her on YouTube called J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life, which inspired me greatly.

AuthorsWiki: Would you like to tell us about your published books?

Victor John Lao: I have one self-published book available in print-on-demand format through an online publishing platform. It is a science fiction novel. My other books are in eBook format and focus mainly on non-fiction topics. Some have been translated into different languages and are available through online digital stores. I write my books myself, and I continue to work on many drafts. I also have several projects currently in progress.

AuthorsWiki: Where did you get the inspiration for publishing books?

Victor John Lao: I was inspired by authors, and I wrote short stories in high school for our Filipino class. My stories were written in Tagalog, one of the major languages spoken in the Philippines. I was inspired by both traditional and independent authors whom I discovered and watched on YouTube. Their journeys inspired me greatly to write and publish my own books.

AuthorsWiki: How do you manage your time to write a book?

Victor John Lao: I write in my free time, considering it one of my hobbies. I give myself enough time to finish a book, and I sometimes sacrifice other activities so I can focus on writing and editing my manuscript. I try to give up unimportant activities that are mainly for leisure, such as playing video games and doing art, when I need to concentrate on my writing. I try to turn my hobbies into passionate work and, whenever possible, monetize them to generate income.

AuthorsWiki: What is your favourite writing method—the one in which you write the most?

Victor John Lao: I write more about non-fiction topics most of the time, and I keep my own journal where I write about my life experiences, worries, and concerns. I also compose prayers, mostly for religious purposes, and I have published a few eBooks based on my writing. I write casually, expressing my thoughts and ideas either on paper or by typing on a computer.

AuthorsWiki: When did you start writing, and how did your interest in writing begin?

Victor John Lao: I first started writing in elementary school, when I kept a diary for school. In high school, there was a Filipino language subject where the entire class was asked to write short stories. Eventually, the stories were compiled and self-published as a collection. That was when I learned how to write stories and was first introduced to the concept of self-publishing.

AuthorsWiki: Is there any special achievement in your life that you would like to share with us and your readers?

Victor John Lao: I received an award for Academic Distinction when I graduated from college with a degree in Psychology. I studied hard and maintained consistently good grades. I received a medal as recognition of my academic achievement, which was a very rewarding experience for me—almost like receiving a summa cum laude distinction.

I love studying, although I became truly serious about academics during college rather than during my elementary and high school years. I had kind teachers in college who motivated me greatly in my studies. I also experienced bullying during my elementary school years, but I was able to recover from that experience and went on to perform much better academically in college. I also had friendly classmates from different college courses, as we shared some classes together, and those experiences made my college years meaningful.

AuthorsWiki: Are you planning to write or publish a book in the present or future?

Victor John Lao: Yes. I already have several projects started and currently in progress. I plan to write many more short fiction and non-fiction works and self-publish them in the future. I have many ideas for books across different genres and topics. I have also been doing a lot of research online about appropriate word counts. Self-published books, however, offer considerable flexibility in terms of length.

AuthorsWiki: Would you like to give a message to your readers and fans?

Victor John Lao: Hello, everyone. I am a writer and author from the beautiful country of the Philippines. Please check out the books I have written. I hope you enjoy my work across both fiction and non-fiction. I value all my fans and readers and truly appreciate all your support.

AuthorsWiki: Every writer has their own ideal. Do you also have an ideal writer? And what are your favourite books that you always want to read?

Victor John Lao: I simply want to be a writer and author who does his very best in the craft of writing as an art. My ideal writer is J.K. Rowling. I admire how she endured hardships before reaching where she is today through her talent, determination, and persistence. I enjoy reading a lot of non-fiction writing and books.

AuthorsWiki: Apart from writing, what are your other hobbies that you enjoy in your free time?

Victor John Lao: I play a lot of video games, which I also stream online. I have been playing video games since childhood and have continued playing them into adulthood. I play a variety of games across different genres and platforms. I also enjoy arts and crafts. I paint and draw, and I usually make rosaries. I also record songs in which I am both the songwriter and the musician.

AuthorsWiki: Would you like to remain in the writing world in the future as well?

Victor John Lao: Yes. Writing is my passion. I always write to express myself and to communicate with others, whether through social media posts or chats with people I know. I have many writing projects that are not finished yet, along with plenty of plans for future book series. I certainly hope to continue writing and remain part of the literary world in the years ahead.
