Interview with Nora Doyle from Milan, Italy: Exploring Poetry, Womanhood, and Fantasy Through Starry Is the Night

At AuthorsWiki, we are delighted to feature Nora Doyle, an Italian author from Milan whose creative journey brings together poetry, personal experiences, mythology, and fantasy. With a background in the arts and marketing, Nora draws inspiration from both the world around her and the emotions that shape her inner life. Her writing explores themes of love, grief, folklore, loss, womanhood, and the quiet beauty hidden in everyday moments.

Nora began her literary journey through poetry, choosing to write in English even though it is not her native language. Her first collection, The Loneliness of the Fox, was published in 2025, followed by Starry Is the Night in 2026. While her debut collection reflects the process of discovering her voice, her latest book offers a more personal exploration of womanhood, change, and emotional growth.

Alongside poetry, Nora is developing two fantasy projects, including a medieval fantasy novel featuring war, love, dragons, and magic. In this AuthorsWiki interview, she discusses her writing journey, creative process, literary inspirations, future projects, and the readers who make her work meaningful.

AuthorsWiki: Apart from writing, what is your occupation?

Nora Doyle: Apart from writing, I work for my local council as a territorial marketing specialist in the tourism office. I help promote places, events, and cultural experiences in my city. It’s a job that combines creativity, communication, and storytelling in a different form.

In many ways, my work and writing influence each other. One allows me to tell stories about real places and communities, while the other lets me create entirely new worlds. Both require curiosity, imagination, and the ability to understand what makes something meaningful to people.

AuthorsWiki: Tell us something about your first book.

Nora Doyle: My first book, The Loneliness of the Fox, was published in 2025. It is a collection of my earliest poems, pieces that weren’t always technically perfect but were full of curiosity, sincerity, and potential.

I deliberately kept many of those early works because I wanted readers to experience my growth as they turned the pages. By the end of the book, I hoped they would feel that they had grown alongside me.

AuthorsWiki: Would you like to tell us about your published books?

Nora Doyle: My latest collection, Starry Is the Night, published in 2026, is a very different book. I like to think of it as a farewell to my twenties.

It’s a deeply personal journey through womanhood and the complicated emotions that come with love, loss, change, and everything life throws at us. While my first collection was about discovering my voice, this one is about learning to live with it. It’s rawer, more chaotic, and marks a new chapter in both my writing and my life.

AuthorsWiki: Where did you find the inspiration to publish your books?

Nora Doyle: The inspiration came from the very simple desire to share my daydreams and emotions with someone else. Writing has always been a way for me to understand myself and the world around me, but publishing felt like opening a door and inviting other people inside.

It made me truly happy to see people’s reactions to and reviews of my books. The support I received was so meaningful that it felt as though every sleepless night spent writing in my journal had been rewarded.

AuthorsWiki: How do you manage your time when writing a book?

Nora Doyle: The biggest secret is this: there is little time and an endless number of ideas. I have a job and everyday responsibilities like everyone else, so I’ve learned to make space for writing whenever I can, fitting it in between daily tasks.

I usually get some free time at night, and sometimes I sacrifice a little sleep when I’m in the flow of writing.

AuthorsWiki: What is your favourite writing method?

Nora Doyle: As I mentioned earlier, I usually have little time during the day, so I tend to write in my phone’s notes app or in my journal when I’m away from home. I fill them with ideas and thoughts, and when I finally sit down to write at home, I can become so focused that hours pass before I realise how late it is. It’s the best feeling.

I’m also a big believer in writing by hand, both for poetry and novels. Having too many tabs open confuses me, so I’d rather have a thousand papers lying around than too many documents open on my laptop.

AuthorsWiki: When did you start writing, and how did your interest in writing begin?

Nora Doyle: When I was little, I was an avid reader, and I would often write additional stories featuring characters from my favourite books, imagining new adventures and worlds beyond the pages. I also spent years writing bedtime stories to read to my little sister.

Those moments were probably my first real experiences of storytelling: creating something from my imagination and sharing it with someone else. Looking back, I think those small stories helped my creativity grow and taught me the joy of bringing ideas to life for others to enjoy.

AuthorsWiki: Is there any special achievement in your life that you would like to share with us and your readers?

Nora Doyle: I’d say my first publication will always be one of the biggest milestones of my life. It will probably remain my favourite memory to look back on because it represents so much more than just the release of a book.

There were many difficulties, doubts, and moments of hard work along the way, but seeing my words become a real book made everything worthwhile. It reminds me of the courage it took to begin my journey as a writer.

AuthorsWiki: Are you planning to write or publish any books in the future?

Nora Doyle: Earlier this year, I finished writing my third poetry collection, which is set to be published later in 2026. I like to describe it as a mythology of womanhood: a collection of hungry, tender, and raging poems that reimagine my experiences as a woman through myth, folklore, and symbolism.

Alongside poetry, I’m currently working on two very different fantasy projects.

The first is a cosy fantasy novel that has been quietly growing with me for years. It’s a story very close to my heart, but I know it still needs time to mature before I can fully dedicate myself to writing it.

The second project, which I’m actively writing right now, is a medieval fantasy novel. It’s an epic story of war, love, dragons, and the magic hidden within the choices we make.

Strangely enough, this idea reignited my passion for writing fantasy. I had been struggling to make progress on my cosy fantasy, but this story arrived almost out of nowhere and reminded me why I fell in love with the genre in the first place.

Sometimes, the stories we aren’t looking for are the ones that find us at exactly the right moment.

AuthorsWiki: Would you like to share a message with your readers and fans?

Nora Doyle: My readers are what give my books purpose. Without you, my stories would exist only inside my notebooks and imagination. So thank you for giving them a chance to find a place in the world by supporting me, sharing your thoughts, leaving reviews, recommending my books, and caring about the stories and characters I’ve created.

Every message, opinion, and kind word means more than you probably realise. Writing a book is a very personal journey, but having readers along the way transforms it into something much bigger.

I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has been part of mine!

AuthorsWiki: Every writer has an ideal. Do you have an ideal writer, and which books do you always enjoy reading?

Nora Doyle: When it comes to poetry, there are a few writers I always find myself returning to for inspiration. I deeply admire Mary Oliver for the way she writes about nature and the human spirit. I’m also endlessly inspired by John Keats and the richness of his language. I admire his work so much!

Among contemporary poets, I love Andrea Gibson and Ocean Vuong. Their work has had a big impact on me. It’s fearless, intimate, and emotionally honest. They remind me that vulnerability can be one of the greatest strengths, not just in writing but in life.

As a fantasy writer, I love books that leave you feeling as though you’ve stepped into an old legend, where every place, every character, and every line carries a little bit of magic. That’s the atmosphere I hope to create in my own work as well.

I’ve been inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien forever (because what fantasy author doesn’t love him?). His love of rich descriptions and intricate world-building has definitely rubbed off on me. If I’m being honest, I have the same tendency to linger on details for pages.

In recent years, I’ve also fallen in love with the amazing world-building and distinctive voice of Christelle Dabos, author of The Mirror Visitor series. It’s my all-time favourite saga!

Another favourite is Alix E. Harrow’s legendary short story The Six Deaths of the Saint, my absolute favourite short story. It made me completely obsessed with plot twists and tales that feel ancient and mythical.

My favourite book of all time, though, is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It holds a very special place in my heart because it helped me understand something I deeply believe in: healing takes time, and it is possible for everyone if they learn to look at things in the right way.

There is something almost magical about the way the garden becomes a place of transformation, not through grand spells or battles, but through small acts of care and connection.

AuthorsWiki: Apart from writing, what other hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

Nora Doyle: I have quite a few creative hobbies that keep me inspired. I love scrapbooking, photography, and anything that allows me to play with colours, details, and visual storytelling in different ways.

I also enjoy baking, especially the sharing side of it. I love giving baked goods to the people I care about; it’s my love language! And, of course, reading will always be one of my favourite ways to spend my free time.

AuthorsWiki: Would you like to remain in the world of writing in the future?

Nora Doyle: I hope to always have a story to tell. Writing has never felt like something I simply chose to do. It feels more like a need, something that naturally finds its way into my life.

I’ve always felt the urge to write things down, not only to publish them in books but also in journals, notes, and other forms. Writing is the way I process emotions, preserve memories, and make sense of the world around me.

So yes, I hope to remain in the writing world for a long time! As long as there are stories waiting to be told and ideas blooming in my mind, I think I’ll always find my way back to the pages with a pen in hand.
