Students from schools in Jamshedpur have united to introduce an innovative book titled Swachhta Samvaad, which emphasizes cleanliness, hygiene, and waste management. This initiative, spearheaded by TATA Steel UISL in collaboration with Potli Productions, is in alignment with the government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, aiming to enhance environmental awareness among the youth of the city.
Swachhta Samvaad Launched by Students
More than 3,000 students engaged in the campaign, which commenced with a city-wide essay competition addressing cleanliness practices and challenges. Subsequently, 43 selected students participated in a creative writing workshop led by Deepali Raina, the Founder of Potli Productions. This workshop, which concentrated on storytelling and effective communication, enabled students to develop the narratives featured in Swachhta Samvaad.
The book encompasses a diverse array of topics related to cleanliness and waste management. In the “Expressions” section, students discuss strategies for reducing landfills, the principles of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” and inventive methods for converting waste into resources through bio-methanation. Creative elements such as poems and stories vividly illustrate these themes, including pieces like “Festivals and New Clothes,” which delves into the idea of reuse, and “The Dustbin Diaries,” a narrative centered on waste segregation.
A notable feature of the book is the graphic novel Toxic Doom, which captivates readers with its environmental themes. The “Our City” section provides an overview of Jamshedpur’s waste management system, including interviews with local safai karmachari and an outline of the various stakeholders involved in maintaining the city’s cleanliness. The “Insights” section presents practical solutions and daily habits to promote cleanliness, followed by an interactive “Fun Time” section filled with fill-in-the-blank activities, riddles, and a game titled “Choose the Right Dustbin.”
Krishna Kumar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, remarked that this is a pioneering student-led publication on cleanliness, emphasizing the importance of showcasing and promoting such initiatives at a national level. He extended his congratulations to the young authors for bringing pride to the city and expressed gratitude to the Potli Productions team for their exceptional work.
Deepali Raina, Founder of Potli Productions, reflected on the project, stating that the enthusiastic involvement of students throughout the process has been truly motivating. She noted that creative expression through media has effectively engaged the youth in significant social discussions.
