At AuthorsWiki, we are delighted to connect with Angela White, an award-winning author from Ohio, USA, whose prolific writing career spans science fiction, fantasy, and romance. Her latest work, The Survivors (Life After War, #1), introduces readers to a post-apocalyptic world where survival, freedom, magic, and the struggle to rebuild society come together.
Angela White is the author of Life After War, Alexa’s Travels, and the Bachelor Battles trilogy. With 41 science fiction, fantasy, and romance novels available in audio, print, screenplay, and eBook formats, she has built an impressive independent publishing career. Her work has also received recognition, including the MAXY Award in 2025 and the PenCraft Award for science fiction in 2022.
Before becoming a full-time author, Angela worked as a taxicab dispatcher and driver in Cincinnati, Ohio. Those years brought her into contact with everything from robberies and medical emergencies to bar fights, unpaid fares, and even a taxicab fire—experiences she recalls with characteristic humour.
Writing has now been her livelihood for 15 years, but her relationship with storytelling began much earlier, when a third-grade school writing contest introduced her to the joy of creating stories.
In this exclusive AuthorsWiki interview, Angela White discusses her unusual journey to becoming a full-time author, her writing process, the inspiration behind her post-apocalyptic fiction, her experiences with self-publishing, her academic ambitions, and why she believes she will always be a storyteller.
AuthorsWiki: Apart from writing, what is your occupation for livelihood?
Angela White: I live off my writing and have for 15 years now. Before I self-published my first novel, I was a taxicab dispatcher in Cincinnati, Ohio. Before that, I drove a taxicab in that city. Wild days, let me tell you! Robberies, lost drivers, passengers running without paying, bar fights, medical emergencies, and even a taxicab that caught on fire while being driven kept me on my toes.
AuthorsWiki: Tell us something about your first book.
Angela White: My first book was drafted out in the ’90s. It didn’t get written until 2009. When I published it in 2010, I didn’t expect it to be such a hit. The time was just right for a post-apocalyptic survival series with fantasy notes. All of the main characters have special gifts that they mostly discover after the end of the world. Over time, they realise they all share a common, and often hated, destiny to save the normals, even if it means dying for them.
AuthorsWiki: Would you like to tell us about your published books?
Angela White: My published books are gory, gritty, uncensored, and full of the graphic details one would expect from the setting. There’s also love, duty, honour, and a burning desire to rebuild the world in a way that works for everyone, not just the rich or powerful.
The underlying themes of freedom and self-redemption make it different from most post-apocalyptic fiction titles. There are massive battles, of course, and most of them are against the remaining governments that want to resume ruling the world. In my books, the people have had enough. With the help of the magic users, they’re finally fighting back.
AuthorsWiki: Where did you get the inspiration for publishing books?
Angela White: My inspiration for publishing came from constant rejection. I lost count of the query letters I’d sent. Back then, each letter was typed on a manual typewriter, using whiteout for any mistakes, then folded, enveloped, stamped, addressed, and mailed by hand.
It took months to get the impersonal rejection letter, so that, at least, hasn’t changed. When Amazon announced KDP, I realised I didn’t have to wait for the keepers to open the gates anymore. I uploaded my files and never looked back.
AuthorsWiki: How do you manage your time to write a book?
Angela White: I have a set list of things to accomplish every day that includes the number of book pages that I need to get in. I always have a book waiting on preorder, so I work on my novels five to six days a week to be sure I never disappoint my readers by missing a deadline.
I can do my list in any order I want, so if I’m not into it when I first get up, that’s okay. I just can’t go to bed until I’ve marked off every single item, and that includes new material that also goes through several error edits before it’s put into the files.
AuthorsWiki: What is your favourite writing method—the one in which you write the most?
Angela White: I record the most because of health issues. I can’t sit at a desk and type for hours anymore. I record it, download the recording, then edit each page several times. I’ve found that this also saves me time in the end. Recording 800 pages in just four months is a lot faster than trying to get that much typed without ruining my health.
AuthorsWiki: When did you start writing, and how did your interest in writing begin?
Angela White: My elementary school had a make-a-book contest when I was in third grade. Over those eight weeks, I wrote The Mystery of the Missing Tabby, Toby, and was hooked. The school library still has it. My mother was also a huge romance reader, so I was surrounded by what my father called “smut books.”
Between the curiosity of what a smut book was and the love of creating my first story, I discovered at a very young age that this is what I wanted to do for my adult career. It’s funny, though. I ended up not writing smut or mysteries! Lol.
AuthorsWiki: Is there any special achievement in your life that you would like to share with us and your readers?
Angela White: I’ve been accepted into Midway University in Kentucky. I’m pursuing dual bachelor’s degrees in Marketing Communication and Game Design. No one in my family has gone to college. I’d be the very first one! I want to build video games that the Department of Education can use to teach kids in school. We all remember being bored in some class because of the way they were teaching it. I want to change that and help those kids learn in new ways.
AuthorsWiki: Are you planning to write or publish a book in the present or future?
Angela White: I always have another book on preorder or waiting to be brought to life. Right now, I’m working on the next book in my Life After War series, Facing Ghosts. It’s reaching the point where my very first series will end within the next four to seven books, and that is where it will connect to my other big series to give all those favourite characters closure, so things have gotten crazy.
AuthorsWiki: Would you like to give a message to your readers and fans?
Angela White: I adore them so much! I wish there was time to tell each one of my readers how important they are to me, how much it means that they read my work, leave me emails, send me letters, and even send me gifts! They’re almost as obsessed with my books as I am, and I’ll always be grateful to them for that.
AuthorsWiki: Every writer has their own ideal. Do you also have an ideal writer? And what are your favourite books that you always want to read?
Angela White: I grew up on Disney and Nora Roberts. In my young adulthood, it was all Stephen King for a while. As I’ve aged, I’ve taken in some classics, like Orwell and Austen, and then some popular currents, like Ali Hazelwood and Sarah J. Maas.
I’ve liked all of those at one point. I don’t really have an ideal. I just want an amazing story. I’ll read any genre, any gender, any topic. Just don’t bore me!
AuthorsWiki: Apart from writing, what are your other hobbies that you enjoy in your free time?
Angela White: In my free time, I go to amusement parks and play video games at home. I’m obsessed with Surf Dog and the new Phantom Theater at Kings Island. I also love Fallout Shelter, Project Zomboid, and The Sims 3. I believe downtime is important to maintaining sanity. I chose to maintain mine by getting shaken around and hitting corpses with spoons. Does that make me odd? I hope so.
AuthorsWiki: Would you like to remain in the writing world in the future as well?
Angela White: I will always be an author. Even when I’m building video games, I’ll be writing the stories that fuel those games. I will still publish novels as well. I have dozens of ideas for new titles that are not part of a series but do still connect to the work I already have available. I think my readers will be very happy about that. Writing is in my blood. I can’t imagine a time when I won’t want to be a writer in some form or fashion.
