Najma Yusufi : The Begums of Peshawar is a richly evocative novel that follows the lives of four Durrani sisters—Bibigul, Maagul, Chan, and Firasat—descended from a family that once held power in Afghanistan but now clings to memories of its past glory in Peshawar’s old city. Across five decades, the story moves from Peshawar to Lahore and then to London, tracing the sisters’ hopes, struggles, and the disappointments they endure in a male-dominated society that values tradition over freedom. Each woman faces her own challenges in marriage and family life as she tries to balance personal dreams with societal expectations.
Alongside their journey is the story of Bano, a servant girl whose life offers a contrasting perspective on class, fate, and self-determination. Through vivid characters and deep emotional insight, the novel explores themes of identity, resilience, and the quiet rebellions that shape these women’s lives.
